Brown Rabbits (Nobody You Know), Oil on Canvas, 60”x34”, 2025 PRICE: $8,000
A modern interpretation of “ Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist” by
Onorio Marinari (Italy, 1670-80) depicting the severed head of St. John as it is presented to the stepdaughter of King Herod Antipas of Galille (northernmost region of ancient Palestine) for accusations of adultery against the royal family.
King Herod imprisoned John the Baptist for condemning his marriage to Herodias (Salome’s mother and first wife of Herod’s half brother; Herod Philip) but was reluctant to have a popular prophet killed.
Salome tempted the King with a dance and was granted anything she desired.
Honor bestowed back upon her mother was what she coveted most and ultimately Salome
treasured the head of Saint John the Baptist for her own.
-Gospel of Mark 6:14-29
-Matthew 14:1-12
